Relevant Information:

Habotat: Pareiorhina rudolphi is found only in streams tributary to the Paraíba do Sul River in the eastern Mantiqueira mountain range, specifically in streams located on the slope and pediplain. Its habitat is rapid-flowing streams in the Ribeirão Grande microbasin, with a sandy substrate containing pebbles and boulders of various sizes (Braga and Andrade 2005). Diet: A herbivorous species that feeds mainly on periphyton (benthic autotrophs composed of microalgae that grow on a substrate). Reproduction: Regarding reproduction, spawning occurs between October and February, with the cycle being completed in April (Braga and Andrade 2005). Etymology: The genus name Pareiorhina: pareio-, from pareiá, cheek; rhina, from rhíne, file or rasp, probably referring to “granular” (or raspy) sides of head. The specific name rudolphi: In honour of Rodolpho von Ihering (1883–1939), zoologist and fish culturist, who described this catfish as Plecostomus (Rhinelepis) microps in 1907, but used a preoccupied name (Plecostomus microps Steindachner 1876). Remarks: Urbanisation in the region imposes diffuse threats on the different subpopulations of the species, and in two locations, the species was no longer recorded. Thus, the species was listed as Near Threatened (NT), meeting the criteria B1b(iii,v) for Vulnerable (VU), but the population is not considered severely fragmented and it is not possible to identify a number of locations (IUCN 2022).
