CW146 has now been described
by Tencatt
et al. as Corydoras
thanatos (now Hoplisoma thanatos) in
2022. Similar in appearance to CW111,
but has a different colour pattern and is sympatric
with this species in the Rio Curua, Rio Xingu drainage,
Brazil. Lineage: Placed in Lineage
9, the "short-snouted" species with the
designated type species: C. punctatus. A
revision and a description in the future would constitute
the resurrection of the genus name Hoplisoma
(Agassiz, 1846). As
of the latest revision (Dias
et al 2024) Corydoras thanatos
has now been placed in Lineage 9 and has the new genus
name of Hoplisoma.Aquarium
Care: This is akin to most of this genus,
very peaceful, and would be best housed with small
to medium sized tankmates such as Tetras, Rasboras
and Danios or in a species tank for breeding purposes.
Best to purchase 6 individuals or more as they will
be happier in a group. Sexual Dimorphism:
As well-documented in Corydoradinae (see Nijssen,
Isbrücker, 1980b; Britto, 2003; Spadella et al.,
2017), male specimens of H. thanatos present
a genital papilla, which is somewhat tubular in shape.
Aquarium male specimens eventually display a conspicuous
elongation of the first and second dorsal-fin branched
rays (Tencatt
et al). Diet:
Readily accepts a mixed and varied diet which includes
granular foods, tablet food, frozen bloodworm and
a good quality flake. Etymology:
From the Greek thánatos, which means death),
the Greek god or personification of death, and the
twin brother of Hypnos, the god/personification of
sleep. Remarks:
This species is
still found on some online sources as Corydoras
thanatos.
