Previously
given the CW number of 32. Description:
Dorsal spines (total): 2; Dorsal soft rays (total):
7-8; Anal soft rays: 7 - 9. Corydoras knaacki
(now Hoplisoma knaacki)is distinguished from
its congeners by having the following combination
of characters: a longitudinal black stripe along midline
of flank; short mesethmoid, with anterior portion
smaller than 50% of the bone length; serrations on
posterior margin of pectoral spine directed towards
the tip of the spine; dorsal fin with the region of
the first branched ray, including membrane, with black
pigmentation, the remaining areas with irregular black
blotches; lacking a vertically elongated black blotch
across the eyes; snout with conspicuously rounded
moderately-developed black spots; and ventral expansion
of infraorbital 1 moderately developed. A small species
that is similar in appearance to Hoplisoma
sp. (C120) but lacks the
black in the dorsal fin. Lineage:
Placed in Lineage 9, the "short-snouted"
species with the designated type species: C. punctatus.
A revision in the future would constitute the resurrection
of the genus name Hoplisoma (Agassiz, 1846).
As of
the latest revision (Dias
et al 2024) Corydoras knaacki
has now been placed in Lineage 9 and has the new genus
name of Hoplisoma. Aquarium
Care:This
is akin to most of this genus, very peaceful, and
would be best housed with small to medium tank mates
such as Tetras, Rasboras and Danios or in a species
tank for breeding purposes. Diet:
A good quality flake food and tablet food for adults
with sporadic feedings of frozen or live food will
keep your Corydoras in good health.
Etymology: The specific name knaacki:
Named for the late Dr. Joachim Knaack (2 January 1933
– 5 December 2012), German physician and biologist.
He was an amateur ichthyologist and aquarist who devoted
more than 60 years of his life for the study of South
American catfishes, especially Corydoras.
Remarks:This species is
still found on some online sources as Corydoras
knaacki.
