Information:
Corydoras diphyes
(now Hoplisoma diphyes) belongs to the family
Callichthyidae or Armoured Catfishes from South America;
namely Paraguay, and is documented as being restricted
to the tributaries of the Río Monday, Río
Acaray, the right bank tributaries of the Río
Paraná and a small stream at Estancia María
Balén. It is also documented as being found
in Brazil. It is a recently described species of Corydoras
(2003). In its natural habitat Hoplisoma
diphyes usually occurs in areas which have sandy
substrates with bank vegetation entering the water.
The water in which they are found varies from dark
(stained with tannins) to clear or slightly turbid.
This particular catfish is documented as being mimicked
by Otocinclus
mimulus. Lineage:
Placed in Lineage 6. This group was always classified
under Corydoras so when a new revision is
carried out a new genus would have to be described
alongside a new type species. As
of the latest revision (Dias
et al 2024) Corydoras diphyes
has now been placed in Lineage 9 and has the new genus
name of Hoplisoma.
Aquarium Care: This is akin to most of this
genus, very peaceful, and would be best housed with
small to medium sized tankmates such as Tetras, Rasboras
and Danios or in a species tank for breeding purposes.
Best to purchase 6 individuals or more as they will
be happier in a group. Diet: Readily
accepts a mixed and varied diet which includes granular
foods, tablet food, frozen bloodworm and a good quality
flake. Etymology: The specific name
diphyes: From the Greek word meaning double
nature which refers to the unique colour patterns
observed in this species – spotted and striped.
Remarks:
This species is
still found on some online sources as Corydoras
diphyes.
