Description:
Can be distinguished from all congeneric species by
the following unique combination of characters: (1)
dorsal fin rays II + 8; anal fin rays: modally 3 +
18 = 21 ; spine of pectoral fin with posterior serrations
modally 18; vertebral count usually 5 + 43–44.
Colouration: Body and head entirely
bright creamy yellow to golden yellow, dorsal half
of head and trunk with light brown; all 4 pairs of
barbels creamy white to snow white; adipose fin creamy
yellow to brownish yellow; anal fin creamy yellow
with lighter basal skin; and caudal fin creamy yellow
with distal black margin (Chen et al. 2024). Etymology:
The genus name of Tachysurus: tachys, swift;
oura, tail, referring to the presumed agility of T.
sinensis based on its “long and nimble”
tail (translation). The specific name of flumendraco:
Derived from the Latin words flumen ( = river)
and draco ( = dragon), in allusion to specific
local common name in Taiwanese dialect as “Ng-Gang-Ling”
meaning as “Yellow River Dragon”. Remarks:
The Pelteobagrus genera have in the past
been distinguished by their forked caudal fins (vs.
truncate/emarginate caudal fins in Pseudobagrusbut mostof
these genera have now been moved to a new family,
Tachysurus (Bogutskaya et al. 2008).
