Habitat: Amazon and Negro River basins
in Brazil.Etymology:
The genus name Pseudepapterus: pseudo-, false;
referring to similarity of P. hasemani to
Epapterus dispilurus, particularly the reduced
dorsal fin. The specific name cucuhyensis:
–ensis, suffix denoting place: Cucuhy (or Cucuí),
a Brazilian district at the border with Colombia,
type locality. Remarks:
Pseudepapterus cucuhyensis is endemic to
Brazil, occurring from the upper Rio Negro to its
mouth, with records for the Trombetas and Xingu rivers
(both in the state of Pará), in the Amazon
river basin. It is a frequent and abundant species.
As no significant threats were identified that put
its population at risk, Pseudepapterus cucuhyensis
was categorised as Least Concern (LC), (IUCN 2022).
