Habitat: The
Guri Sea Catfish (Genidens genidens) can be found
off the coast of southern Bahia, Brazil, and Uruguay.
Reproduction: They migrate in large schools
to fresh water, where they spawn in spring. Themales carry out incubation of the eggs and
leave their young in fresh water, where they grow
and develop, to later return to the sea. Remarks:
The Guri Sea Catfish (Genidens genidens)
is assessed as Least Concern based on its wide range
along the eastern coast of South America. This species
is harvested throughout most of its range as a food
a source. It is reported as abundant in areas of its
range, but the species has a low fecundity which may
make it susceptible to fishing pressure. Further research
and monitoring of the harvest levels, fishing effort
and population numbers is needed to confirm whether
any serious population declines are occurring; if
this proves to be the case then a reassessment will
result in the species being moved into a higher threat
category (IUCN 2009). Etymology:
The specific name genidens: génys,
jaw; dens (L.), tooth, referring to the moveable teeth
on palate.
Western
Atlantic: Guyana south to La Plata River
estuary (Argentina).
