Batrachocephalus mino,
the beardless sea catfish, is the only species of
catfish (order Siluriformes) in the genus Batrachocephalus
of the family Ariidae. Habitat: Found
in marine coastal waters, as well as in estuaries
and tidal rivers. Diet: Feeds on
invertebrates and small fishes. Etymology:
The genus name Batrachocephalus: bátrachos,
frog; cephalus, from kephal, head, referring to the
frog-like head of B. ageneiosus (= mino).
The species epithet mino: presumably a local
name for this fish along upper Ganges estuaries in
India.
Indo-West
Pacific: Bay of Bengal, and parts of the
western central Pacific, in coastal waters, estuaries,
and lower reaches of rivers. Type locality:
Upper part of [Ganges] estuaries.
