Was described by Pieter Bleeker
in 1846, originally under the genus Arius
and after two genera and specific name changes has
returned to its original description. Habitat:
It inhabits southern and southeastern Asian brackish
waters, also occurring in marine and freshwaters but
predominantly in brackish waters. Etymology:
The specific name macronotacanthus: macro-,
large; notos, back; acanthus, spine, referring to
the thick dorsal spine. Remarks:
Can sometimes be found on some online searches as
Nemapteryx macronotacantha.
