following unique set of characters: eye diameter 1.9-3.2%
HL; interorbital distance 19.2-25.1% HL; snout length
28.6-34.1% HL; length of caudal peduncle 33.7-36.5%
SL; 44-45 vertebrae. Colouration:
Brown spots on the dorsal and pectoral fins concentrated
in a dark band in the distal half. Etymology:
The genus name Breitensteinia:
–ia, belonging to: Heinrich Breitenstein (1848-1930),
German physician who served with the Dutch East Indies
army; he collected fishes and reptiles in Borneo for
Steindachner, including presumably the type of B.
insignis. The specific name insignis:
conspicuous, probably referring to “intense”
brownish-purple spots on sides, and/or yellowish-white
dorsal, pectoral and anal fins that are “more
or less mottled with dark purple” (translations).
Remarks:
This species is known only from a limited number of
collections taken in the Barito River drainage in
southern Borneo. There are not enough point collections
to accurately estimate Extent of Occurrence (EOO),
Area of Occupancy (AOO), or number of locations. Population
size and trend are unknown. Localised and regional
threats exist, but their direct impact on habitat
quality and population status are largely unknown.
Therefore, this species is assessed as Data Deficient
until more information becomes available (IUCN 2019).
