Description:
Corydoras gladysae (now Urkumaysae gladysae)
is distinguished from other species of the genus by
the caudal-fin shape, slightly emarginated and by
presenting the shortest dorsal and pectoral spines
length (mean = 9.2 % and 14.8 % of SL, respectively).
This Corydoras (Urkumaysae) species
is similar looking to the Aspidoras genus
and in the future may be moved into this genera. Habitat:
Currently, the species is only known from Calchaquí
river, in the sub-Andean range system, at Cachi and
Payogasta localities, in Cachi Department, Salta,
Argentina. This river is a tributary to the superior
river basin of the Juramento river, that ends in Paraná
river.Lineage:
Placed in Lineage 6 which has always been classified
as Corydoras (Lacépède, 1803)
so a new genus would need to be described and a new
type species when a revision is carried out. As
of the latest revision (Dias
et al 2024), Corydoras gladysae
has now been placed in Lineage 9 and has the new genus
name of Hoplisoma. Update:
As of the latest revision (Alfonso
et al. 2024) Hoplisoma petracinii
has still been placed in Lineage 9 but has the new
genus name of Urkumayu. Aquarium
Care: This is akin to most of this genus,
very peaceful, and would be best housed with small
to medium sized tankmates such as Tetras, Rasboras
and Danios or in a species tank for breeding purposes.
Best to purchase 6 individuals or more as they will
be happier in a group. Diet: Readily
accepts a mixed and varied diet which includes granular
foods, tablet food, frozen bloodworm and a good quality
flake. Etymology: The genus name
Urkumayu: Comes from the Quechua, combining
urku (mountain) and mayu (river), referring to the
habitat of this species. They are all endemic to the
Andean portion of the northwest of the La Plata basin,
Argentina. The specific epithet refers to and is dedicated
to its original collector Gladys Ana María
Monasterio de Gonzo. Remarks:
Coming from the southern parts of South America this
species prefers the water temperature to be more on
the cooler side. This species
is
still found on some online sources as Corydoras
gladysae
or Hoplisoma gladysae.
