Habitat:
Hoplomyzon sexpapilostoma was described from
Masparro river at Masparro dam, Barinas state (Taphorn
and Marrero 1990). It is widely distributed in Western
Andean tributaries of the Orinoco basin, along the
piedmont region from the river Ariari (Guaviare drainage)
to the Guache river in Portuguesa drainage (Taphorn
and Marrero 1990). In Colombia it occurs in rivers
Ariari, Caja, Upamena, Cusiana, and Cravo Norte. In
Venezuela the species is reported from rivers Torbes,
Bumbum, La Yuca, Masparro, Boconó, Guanare,
Las Marías and Guache, all in Apure drainage.
The species has an elevational distribution ranges
from 59-1,406 m above sea level. Diet:
It is presumed to feed on benthic aquatic invertebrates.Etymology: The genus
name Hoplomyzon: hoplo-, armed, referring
to body “armed with six longitudinal series
of bony bucklers”; myzon, to suck, presumably
referring to resemblance to Asian (Exostoma)
and neotropical (Astroblepus) catfishes (as
noted by Myers) that have sucker mouths (a resemblance
mainly due to adnate maxillary barbels in Hoplomyzon.
The specific name sexpapilostoma: sex, six;
papilla, tubercle; stoma, mouth, referring to six
buccal papillae (four on upper lip, one at each corner
of mouth). Remarks:
This species is widespread, occurring in some
protected/conservation areas and remote regions. The
data in biological collections and different regional
reports do not suggest a perceptible reduction in
the populations of the species. Therefore, it is evaluated
as Least Concern (IUCN 2021).
