Information:
Habitat:
Pseudolaguvia lapillicola, is described from
southern Karnataka, Peninsular India. Description:
It is similar to P. foveolata from West Bengal
and the only other congener from Peninsular India,
P.
austrina, in having
a rhomboid adhesive thoracic disc reaching posteriorly
only to middle of pectoral-fin base, but is distinguished
from these two species by details of body proportions.
Colouration: It is distinguished
from other congeners by its colour pattern consisting
of a yellow brown ground colour with peppering of
dark brown to black spots, two incomplete cream vertical
bands restricted to ventral side of body and a crescentic
mark at the base of the caudal fin separated from
subdistal caudal fin blotches. Externally, these fish
resemble members of the sisorid catfish genus Glyptothorax.
Pseudolaguvia is diagnosed by the presence
of a short thoracic adhesive apparatus with median
depression; wide gill openings nearly meeting one
another on the underside of the body; serrations on
anterior margin of pectoral fin spine pointing toward
tip; smooth to granulate anterior margin on the dorsal
fin spine; slender body; papillate upper lip; and
8–10 anal fin rays. Both the dorsal fin and
pectoral fin have strong spines. The head and body
are slightly depressed. The eyes are small, dorsal,
and located in the middle of the head. The barbels
are annulated with black rings. Etymology:
Pseudolaguvia, Pseudo-,
false; i.e., although this genus may superficially
resemble several “closely allied” genera,
including Laguvia (a junior synonym of Erethistes),
such an appearance is false. The species epithet lapillus,
pebble; colere, to dwell, referring to the substrate
of its habitat, including gravel and rounded stones.
