Description:
This species was first referred to as Hara filamentosa
mainly due to it having an exceedingly long extension
to the top ray of the caudal fin, which was diagnosed
as a prominent feature by Blyth in 1860 in his description
of Hara filamentosa. However, Erethistes
(Hara) filamentosa as diagnosed
by Ng & Kottelat (2007) comes from an area further
south and therefore from a different drainage system.
In Ferraris 2007, Erithistes has been moved
back to its original placement in the Sisoridae family
which had been moved there by de Pinna in 1996, along
with Conta, Erethistoides, Hara
and Pseudolaguvia. Etymology:
Erithistes, Etymology not explained, presumably
erethizon, porcupine and–istes, adjectival suffix,
i.e., porcupine-like, referring to strong and serrated
dorsal and pectoral-fin spines.The species
epithet longissimus
means longest, referring to the relatively long caudal
peduncle. Remarks: Fishbase and some other online sources still
have this species as Hara longissima but
this name is treated as a synomyn in Eschmeyer's Catalog
of Fishes where the current valiidity is Erethistes
longissimus and placed in the Sisoridae family.
